Loughs with pine islands, bare mountains, bog and gorse, sheepdogs at work and
Kylemore Abbey on its water. Weighing up Connemara Ireland tours? These are the views you will
stop for.
The first frames are the loughs. A small island of pines sits reflected in still water below
bare mountains, and the same kind of island stands in a dark lough under moving cloud. Then come
the ranges: bare summits above autumn bog grass, russet slopes over a band of forestry, and a
twin-peaked mountain above white cottages.
Next is the road through them. It runs down a valley towards a long lough, past a bog pool
with yellow gorse and a lone tree above a bay of islands. Sheep graze among rhododendron above
the water, and a sheepdog works a marked flock on a slope. You pass the ruin of Clifden Castle,
a thatched cottage, a grey pony by a stone cottage and an old bridge on the moor. The last
frames are Kylemore Abbey, the paid stop many tours make, reflected in its lough.
