What the weather does to a Connemara day
A day in Connemara is trails, viewpoints, a sheepdog field and a long drive. Only Kylemore’s rooms and church, and the park’s visitor centre, keep you dry. So the weather decides how your day feels, and sometimes where it goes.
Rain is the rule. Met Éireann’s station at Belmullet, the nearest on this Atlantic coast, records about 1,242 mm a year, with 1 mm or more on around 200 days. The mountains of Connemara are likely wetter still. The figures below are Belmullet’s averages for 1991 to 2020.
Some weather closes things. The national park shuts its grounds during orange and red weather warnings. Where a fare needs good weather and the operator cancels, you are offered a different date or a full refund.
On a choice day, the weather helps you pick. In heavy rain, take Kylemore, where the rooms and the church are indoors. On a clear day, take the park and the summit of Diamond Hill.

Summer is warmest, but the rain returns in August and the midges come out on still, humid days. Autumn is wet, and the bog turns russet. Winter brings the gales and the shortest days, so start your walk early and finish in daylight.

Best time of day in Connemara
The tours set the clock for you. The shared days leave Galway between 09:30 and 10:15 and stop on the way west. The park’s visitor centre opens at 9:00, so if you drive, you can be on the trail before the tour groups arrive.
On a still morning, the loughs hold the mountains’ reflection, the view in most photographs of the region. Wind breaks it up, so take the picture first and walk after.
Late in the day, watch the light. In winter the sun shows for about an hour a day, and Kylemore’s last entry is 16:00. In summer, the long evenings give you time for the Sky Road after the tours have gone home.
