Plan Your Trip to Connemara

Connemara has no gate, and most of it costs you nothing to see. If you are pricing Connemara tickets, the real question is where your day’s one long stop goes. Settle that first, then plan the roads, the weather and the day of the week.

What costs money in Connemara, and what is free

You pay for very little. Connemara National Park is free to enter and free to park at, all year round. The mountains, the loughs and the coast road cost nothing either. The paid stop most tours make is Kylemore Abbey, and some fares already include its estate ticket.

Kylemore Abbey prints no single price that can be quoted here. Galway Tour Company’s own listing puts the fee at EUR 14 per person, payable to the driver. So if your fare leaves the ticket out, carry euro in cash. Aughnanure Castle, the O’Flaherty tower house near Oughterard, charges EUR 5 for an adult in the 2026 season, which runs from 27 February to 18 November.

Where your day’s long stop goes

A day from Galway gives you one long block of time, and you cannot spend it twice. No shared day tour does both Kylemore Abbey and the national park. So choose the stop, and the tour follows.

Want the walled garden and the house? Book a Kylemore day. Want the summit of Diamond Hill? Give yourself three hours in the park, because the upper loop is 3.7 km and graded strenuous. Can’t decide? The choice days let you pick on the morning, once you have seen the weather.

Galway as your base

Galway is where almost every tour starts, and it has the trains and the coaches. The shared days leave from two kerbs in the city centre. Lally Tours goes from outside the HYDE Hotel on Forster Street. Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours, Galway Tour Company and Ireland Wild Escapes go from the Kinlay Hostel on Merchants Road, off Eyre Square. The private cars collect you where you are staying.

Staying further west cuts the drive. Clifden, Leenane and Westport all sit closer to the park entrance near Letterfrack. These are the park’s own figures:

From Dublin there is no day trip. The tours from Dublin run for 3, 5 or 10 days, with hotels in the fare and one day in Connemara.

How long to give Connemara

One day from Galway covers one long stop and the road there and back. The shared days take 7 hours 30 minutes to 9 hours. A car of your own, or a private driver, lets you add the second stop. With two days you can walk Diamond Hill on one and see Kylemore and the Sky Road on the other.

Leave time for the roads. The N59 is the spine of the region, and it is narrow and slow beyond Oughterard. Sheep on the road are part of the drive.

The day of the week matters

The national park itself is open every day. Its visitor centre is not. Since 1 July 2026 it opens Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:30, and on bank holiday Mondays.

Weather and what to pack

Plan for rain whatever the month. The nearest Met Éireann averages, for Belmullet on the Mayo coast, record about 1,240 mm of rain and 200 wet days a year. May is the sunniest month, June has the fewest wet days, and November is the wettest. Bring waterproofs and shoes that grip, because every tour spends most of its day outdoors. Getting around without a tour

You can reach Connemara by bus, but not quickly. Bus Éireann route 419 runs the lake road to Clifden and on to Leenane once a day, and route 424 runs the coast. Citylink runs to Clifden, Cleggan and Letterfrack. With one bus a day on some routes, a return trip needs care.
