A car for your group alone, collected from wherever you are staying in Galway. You drive out through Connemara's stone walls and Irish-speaking villages to Kylemore, and get two hours there. Your car, your pickup, Kylemore and the Sky Road

Only your group

No other passengers: the car and the day are yours.

Collected where you stay

You tell Connemara Chauffeurs your address and the start time you want.

Two hours at Kylemore

Time for the abbey, the church and the walled garden at your own pace.

The Sky Road

Twenty minutes above Clifden Bay, looking out to Inishturk and Turbot.

Home by the coast

Back through Inverin, Spiddal and Barna on the south Connemara shore.

Room for a family

Infant seats are available, strollers are fine, and there is WiFi on board.

Four to five hours, your car, your pickup

A coach keeps one timetable for a busload of strangers. This car keeps it for you. Your driver collects you from your hotel or rental and sets the day around your group. You choose the pickup point and agree the time after you book. From $643 for up to seven people, you pay for the car, the driver and the WiFi on board.

The route runs out on the quieter roads, past stone walls, the Maamturk Mountains and Irish-speaking villages. It is a lot of Connemara for four to five hours. Most of the time goes to the drive and to your two hours at Kylemore, so treat it as a scenic drive with one long stop. Travellers write about a day planned around small children, and about stops on the way to Kylemore.

The price is for the car, up to seven

The fare is per group, so it is best value when you fill the car. Split seven ways it comes to about $91 each, before the Kylemore ticket. For two, it is about $321 each. A seat on the Lally Tours coach costs $76, and that fare includes the ticket. So for a couple, the coach is far cheaper. What you pay for here is the pickup, the pace and a car that waits for you. Weigh it against the coach days before you make your Connemara booking.

Kylemore on your terms

Two hours at Kylemore Abbey is the one long stop. The ticket is not in the fare: you buy it online or at the visitor centre. It opens the restored ground-floor rooms, the Neo-Gothic Church, the Mausoleum and the Victorian Walled Garden, with a shuttle bus to the garden. The café sits outside the paid area, so you can eat there with or without a ticket. After the abbey, your driver takes you along the Sky Road, with twenty minutes above Clifden Bay and its islands. The road home follows the south coast through Inverin, Spiddal and Barna, with a stop at Standún, a family-run shop of Irish gifts. Connemara National Park is not on this route, so if the trails matter more than the abbey, a park day suits you better.

How the four to five hours run

  1. Pickup where you choose. A time you agree with Connemara Chauffeurs after you book.
  2. Out through Connemara. Stone walls, the Maamturk Mountains and Irish-speaking villages, from the car.
  3. Kylemore Abbey, 2 hours. The abbey, the church and the walled garden; buy your ticket at the gate.
  4. Sky Road, 20 minutes. Views over Clifden Bay to Inishturk and Turbot.
  5. The south coast home. Inverin, Spiddal and Barna, with a stop at the Standún gift shop.
  6. Drop-off where you started. Back at your door, four to five hours after pickup.

Who this suits: families and groups of four to seven

Book this if

You are a family or a group of four to seven and want the car to yourselves for half a day. It suits parents with small children, since infant seats are available and strollers are fine. It also suits anyone short on time who still wants Kylemore and the Sky Road.

Choose something else instead if

You are one or two people on a budget: the Leenane and Kylemore day costs $76 a seat with the ticket included. If you want a full day in your own vehicle, the private minibus hire from Galway runs ten hours for up to fifteen. The car is not suitable for wheelchair users; Walk About Galway's private sheep farm and Kylemore day is marked accessible.

What one group price covers

In the fare

  • Private transportation
  • WiFi on board
  • Pickup where you choose in Galway

Not in the fare

  • Lunch or snacks (own expense)
  • Kylemore Abbey admission (itinerary: not included)

Where your driver collects you

There is no meeting point to find. After you book, contact Connemara Chauffeurs with the address you want to be collected from and the time that suits you. You are dropped back at the same place at the end.

Staying outside Galway city? Ask when you book. Getting to Connemara sets out the two roads west from Galway, and the Connemara map shows Kylemore, Clifden and the Sky Road on one screen.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kylemore Abbey ticket included?
No. Lunch and the Kylemore ticket are at your own expense. Buy the ticket online or at the visitor centre; your driver waits while you visit.
How many people does the price cover?
Up to seven, with no other passengers. For one or two travellers, the Leenane and Kylemore day costs far less per head and includes the ticket.
Can we go to the national park instead?
The listed route stops at Kylemore and the Sky Road, not the park. For three hours on the trails, book the national park day trip from Galway.
Is it good with small children?
Yes. Infant seats are available and strollers are fine. Travellers with young children write about a driver who planned the day around them.
What time does it start?
When you choose. After booking, you agree the pickup address and a start time with Connemara Chauffeurs.
