Connemara Season by Season

Connemara is open all year, and the tours run in every month. What changes is the rain, the wind, the light and a few opening hours. This guide takes the year a season at a time, for a tour day rather than a beach day, so you can pick your Connemara booking date with the weather in mind. The month-by-month figures live on Connemara weather.

The climate figures are Met Éireann's 1991 to 2020 averages for Belmullet, the nearest Atlantic station, on the Mayo coast. The mountains around the park are wetter.

When is the best time for a Connemara tour?

May, if you can choose. It is the sunniest month on the averages, at 6.3 hours of sun a day, and the driest, at 70.8 mm of rain. June has the fewest wet days, 12.4, and July the fewest gales. November is the wettest month.

That said, no month is dry. Belmullet records about 200 days a year with a millimetre of rain or more. Book the day that suits your trip, and pack for rain whatever the season.

Spring: March to May

Average highs climb from 10.5°C in March to 14.6°C in May, and rain falls steadily from 90.6 mm to 70.8 mm. Sunshine rises from 3.5 to 6.3 hours a day. Gales fade from 2.6 days in March to under one in May.

Aughnanure Castle opens for its 2026 season on 27 February. Kylemore moves from its winter to its summer hours in early March. With less rain than winter and more sun each month, spring suits the park trails.

Summer: June to August

This is the warmest stretch, with highs of 16.3°C to 17.7°C. June has the fewest wet days of the year and July has almost no gales. August turns wetter again, at 100.5 mm.

Kylemore opens from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:00, and sunshine averages 4.4 to 5.6 hours a day. Aughnanure Castle opens daily from 9:30 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:15. Midges come out on warm, humid days, so carry repellent for the park.

Autumn: September to November

September stays mild, with a 16.5°C average high and 4.0 hours of sun a day. Then the year turns: October brings 131.2 mm of rain and November 139.6 mm, the wettest month. Gale days rise from 1.2 in September to 2.7 in November.

Aughnanure Castle shortens its hours to 9:30 to 17:00 from 29 October and closes for the season after 18 November. Kylemore switches to winter hours in late October.

Winter: December to February

Highs sit around 9°C, and the sun shows for little more than an hour a day in December and January. January is the windiest month, with 6.3 gale days on average, and the three winter months add up to about 15. Rain runs from 109.9 mm in February to 136.9 mm in January.

Kylemore opens from 10:00 to 17:00 in winter, with last admission at 16:00, and closes from 24 to 26 December. The park stays open, but its visitor centre closes on Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day. Aughnanure is closed until late February.

Which days is the park visitor centre open?

From Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:30, and on bank holiday Mondays. Since 1 July 2026 it closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, and it is shut on Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day. The trails, The Hungry Hiker café and the other services stay open on those days.

So a Monday or Tuesday park day still works for walking. You lose the exhibition and the free film. The visitor centre and the car park sit about 200 m beyond Letterfrack on the N59, coming from Leenane; from Clifden the turn is on your right before the village.

What are Kylemore's winter hours?

From late October to early March, Kylemore Abbey opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. The switch dates move each year, so check the abbey's opening times before you travel.

On a winter day tour, two hours at the abbey still fits inside those hours. Kylemore closes from 24 to 26 December.

What does the wind do to a tour day?

Gales are a winter feature: 6.3 days in January against 0.1 in July, on the averages. The Sky Road skirts the open coast, so a winter stop there is an exposed one.

In an orange or red weather warning, the national park closes its grounds. Check Met Éireann the evening before a park day.

When are the best months to hike or cycle?

For the Diamond Hill summit, May and June: the most sun, the least rain and the fewest wet days of the year. Avoid the gale months if you want the view from the top.

The same months suit cycling. Fat Bike Galway's electric fat-bike day and its guided national park hike both move or refund a day they cancel for weather.

What is there to do at the park when it rains?

Go indoors at the visitor centre, when it is open. Its free exhibition covers the landscape since the last ice age, how the land was used, and the conservation of the bog, and a free 20-minute film runs there too. The Hungry Hiker café, the toilets and the indoor picnic area are on the same site.

Then walk the short Ellis Wood loop, 0.5 km through woodland to a waterfall. On a choice day, a wet morning is also the moment to pick Kylemore.

Which month suits which kind of day?

• A Kylemore day: any month but the Christmas closure. The house and the church are indoors, and two hours fits inside the winter hours.
• A park day or the guided hike: May and June, for the sun and the fewest wet days. The trails are open all year, but gale days climb from October.
• The e-bike day: the calmer months, from April to September, when gales average fewer than two days a month.
• A tour from Dublin: any season, but book early, since Rabbie's refunds only with 21 days' notice.

Is Connemara worth a tour in winter?

Yes, if you plan for short, wet days. Kylemore Abbey stays open from 10:00 to 17:00 except from 24 to 26 December, and the national park never closes. Entry to the park and its car park stays free.

You lose Aughnanure Castle, which is closed until late February, and you get the least sun of the year, 1.2 to 2.4 hours a day. Check the booking page for your date, which shows whether a tour runs that day.

What should you pack in each season?

A waterproof jacket in every month: no month averages fewer than 12 wet days. Add a warm layer from October to April, when average lows sit between 3.9°C and 8.7°C. In summer the lows are 10.6°C to 12.4°C, so a fleece is enough on the coach.

For the park, wear boots or trail shoes with grip: the trails are old bog road, steps, gravel and boardwalk. In summer add insect repellent, and in any season carry water and a snack, since no day tour includes lunch.

What if the weather cancels your tour?

Most day tours run in rain, and the reviews show it. Connemara Chauffeurs and Fat Bike Galway state that a weather cancellation is re-dated or refunded. Most other day tours refund in full up to 24 hours ahead, so watch the forecast the day before.

On a three-hour choice day, the weather makes the call for you: the park when it is clear, Kylemore when it pours.
