Best Connemara Tour: Kylemore, the National Park, or Your Own Car

The best Connemara tour is the one that spends its long stop where you want to be. Every day from Galway gives you one long block: Kylemore Abbey, the national park trails, or the one you pick on the day. This guide sorts the Connemara Ireland tours by that choice first, then by the ticket, the vehicle, the time and the kerb you leave from.

Connemara has no gate and no entry ticket. The park is free. So the price of a day is mostly the seat, plus Kylemore if you go in. Read the first three sections and most of the decision is made.

Which Connemara tour is best for a first visit?

For most first visits, a Kylemore day with the ticket in the fare. The Lally Tours Leenane day leaves the HYDE Hotel at 09:45, stops at Leenane and by the fjord at Killary, and gives you two hours at Kylemore Abbey with entry to the abbey and the Victorian Walled Garden paid. If you would rather walk than tour a house, take a park day instead. The national park day trip from Galway gives you three hours on the trails for $57. If you are five or more, or want your own pace, price the private half day: $643 for a car of up to seven.

Kylemore day or national park day?

Choose Kylemore if you want the one building everyone photographs. It was built from 1867 by Mitchell and Margaret Henry, and Benedictine nuns have lived there since December 1920. Your ticket covers the restored ground-floor rooms, the Neo-Gothic Church, the woodland walks and the six-acre walled garden, with a shuttle bus between them. Upstairs is closed.

Choose the park if you want to be outside and on your feet. Connemara National Park covers some 2,000 hectares of mountain, bog and woodland near Letterfrack, and entry is free. Four waymarked trails start at the visitor centre, the longest to the summit of Diamond Hill.

The two sit side by side. The abbey adjoins the park across the lough, but no shared day spends its long stop at both.

What is a "choose one" day?

It is a day with a three-hour block that you spend at Kylemore or in the park, decided when you get there. Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours and Ireland Wild Escapes run them. The park costs nothing. Kylemore is extra on those days: Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours' driver sells tickets for cash, and Ireland Wild Escapes' listing does not say, so ask.

• Paid to the driver: Galway Tour Company's Cong day, where its driver takes EUR 14 per person in cash, and Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours' choice day, cash only.
• Yours to buy: every private car. You pay at the estate and the driver waits.
• Not stated: Ireland Wild Escapes' day and Rabbie's 3-day tour. Ask before you book.

Lally Tours' national park day has no Kylemore stop at all, so there is nothing to pay.

Coach, minivan or private car?

A coach seat is the cheapest way in. Lally Tours' Leenane coach takes up to 61, its park day 53, and Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours' choice day 37. Ireland Wild Escapes runs a minivan of up to 30, and Lally Tours' sheepdog day stops at 25.

A private car costs the same whether one or seven of you ride. It collects you where you stay, and you can ask for Kylemore and the park on one day. The private Connemara tours run from $643 for a half day to $936 for a ten-hour minibus.

For one or two people, the coach wins on price every time. From five people up, split a car and compare.

Which days give you the most time at one stop?

The choice days and the guided hike give you three hours in one place. The Kylemore days give you two hours at the abbey, and Lally Tours' park day two hours on the trails. Galway Tour Company gives you up to two hours at Kylemore, then 45 minutes in Cong.

Two hours at Kylemore covers the house and the garden if you take the shuttle straight away. The abbey itself suggests three to six hours for the whole estate, so no coach day sees all of it. Jordan, on the Lally day, found the abbey stop a little rushed and still gave five stars.

Which tour suits hikers?

For the summit of Diamond Hill, take a day with three hours in the park. The upper loop is 3.7 km and graded strenuous. Amy F. took Lally Tours' two-hour park day, found it too short for the top, and walked the lower trail in an hour instead.

What if it rains?

It will, on some part of most days. The nearest Met Éireann averages record about 200 wet days a year, and the mountains are wetter. Tours run in the rain, and the reviews bear it out: Linda had wind and rain all day on the Lally Kylemore day and said it only added to the mood.

On a choice day, rain is a reason to pick the abbey, where the rooms and the church are under a roof. The park closes its grounds during orange and red weather warnings, and some private operators move or refund a day they cancel for weather.

Which leaves from the HYDE Hotel and which from the Kinlay Hostel?

Lally Tours leaves from outside the HYDE Hotel on Forster Street: 09:45 for the Leenane and park days, 10:15 for the sheepdog day. Its team wears blue jackets, and it can collect you from your hotel if you ask at least 24 hours ahead.

The other shared days meet outside the Kinlay Hostel on Merchants Road, off Eyre Square. Wild Atlantic Way Day Tours leaves at 09:30, and Galway Tour Company at 10:00, with check-in from 09:40. The private cars collect you from your door.

Three things come up, and each has a fix. Time at Kylemore feels short to some, so choose a three-hour day if the abbey is your priority. The meeting pin for one Merchants Road day sits about 100 m from where the bus waits, which cost Vincent L. the departure: go by the address. And Leeann M. missed a lunch stop in Leenane that the day was meant to make, so bring a snack.
